Extreme Insulin Resistance From Insulin Antibodies (Not Insulin Receptor Antibodies) Successfully Treated With Combination Immunosuppressive Therapy.

A relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and insulin antibodies (IAs) was first described in the 1950s and was thought to be due to the use of nonhuman insulins (1). Since the introduction of human insulin, the presence of IAs and consequent IR was felt to be clinically insignificant (2). The presence of high levels of IAs, associated with random hypoglycemia in insulin-naive patients, is...

Insulin-binding antibodies in relation to insulin therapy.

Methods for detecting insulin binding or transporting antibodies are described, involving the use of radioactively labelled insulin (insulin (131)I). These antibodies are detected in a high proportion of patients receiving insulin, particularly those requiring large doses. The protein fractions concerned appear to be the beta and gamma globulins. The significance of the phenomenon is discussed.

Immunological insulin resistance due to insulin antibodies developed after cessation of insulin therapy in a patient with type 2 diabetes.

W hile insulin antibodies reportedly exist in about half of patients with type 2 diabetes who inject insulin, these antibodies do not often severely affect blood glucose levels (1). Here, we report a patient who had insulin antibodies against human insulin and developed insulin resistance after episodes of frequent hypoglycemic attacks, even though insulin therapy had been discontinued. A 68-ye...

Insulin in blood and insulin antibodies.

T HIS presentation is concerned with the state of insulin in plasma rather than the physiologic regulation of insulin secretion. Our own studies on the concentrations of immunoassayable insulin in blood in hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic states have recently been summarized elsewhere [ 7-31. Since insulin in blood has never been extracted and recovered in amounts sufficient to permit its chemica...
